Concrete scanning in Ballarat and Melbourne

Concrete Scanning, Ground Penetrating Radar & Slab Scanning

Non-destructive scanning gives detailed images of what's buried in concrete floors, walls, ceilings and structures, before anyone cuts into them.

Our scanning services show clients precisely what's in the concrete they're working with. That certainty reduces overall project management costs and, more importantly, prevents damage. We work with clients to keep projects moving in the right direction while minimising risk.

Quality scanning across Ballarat, Melbourne and Western Victoria

If you're looking to cut, drill, core or demolish, or you need to locate services below ground, we can handle the scanning and ground penetrating radar side of it.

Scanner technology minimises the risk of damaging post-tension strands, electrical cable and other assets concealed within a slab or structure. Our technicians locate objects hidden in concrete using non-destructive technology, and the scan is completed before any cutting or drilling starts, so nothing hidden causes damage to machinery or injures an operator.

The process presents no health hazards to other workers on site, which means the area doesn't need to be cleared the way it does for radiography.

What scanning finds

  • Reinforcing bar, mesh and cover depth
  • Post-tension cables and strand profiles
  • Electrical conduit and embedded services
  • Voids, slab thickness and beam locations
  • In-slab heating and hydronic pipework

How it works on the day

We grid the area, scan it, then mark the findings directly on the surface so the cutting crew can see exactly where it's safe to go. Where the drawings and the scan disagree, the scan wins. If a proposed penetration can't be done safely, we'll say so and usually suggest where it can be moved to.

Scan before you cut

It's the cheapest insurance on the job. A scan takes a fraction of the time and cost of repairing a severed PT strand or a cut services main, let alone the program delay that comes with it. If you're booking us for core drilling or wall sawing on a suspended slab, ask us to scan at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

What can concrete scanning detect?

Reinforcing bar, mesh and cover depth, post-tension cables and strand profiles, electrical conduit and embedded services, voids, slab thickness, beam locations and in-slab heating or hydronic pipework.

Is concrete scanning safe to work around?

Yes. Ground penetrating radar presents no health hazard to other workers on site, so the area doesn't need to be cleared the way it does for radiography.

How long does a concrete scan take?

For a handful of penetrations it's usually the same visit as the cutting, before we start. Larger areas are gridded, scanned and marked up before the cutting crew begins.

What happens if the scan disagrees with the drawings?

The scan wins. If a proposed penetration can't be done safely we'll say so, and we'll usually be able to suggest where it can be moved to.

Working somewhere awkward? Send a photo and a rough measurement. We'll tell you which method suits, what access we need and what it'll cost, usually the same day.
