Concrete wall cutting in Ballarat and Melbourne

Concrete Wall Cutting

Wall saws, or track saws as they're better known, cut clean and precise up to 750 mm deep through vertical concrete walls and floors.

Wall sawing uses a circular steel blade with synthetic diamond segments laser welded around the rim. The blade mounts to a motor head that runs along a fixed track, so the cut follows the track rather than the operator's hand. That's where the accuracy comes from.

Power comes from either hi-frequency electric or hydraulic diesel, depending on where the job is and what we can get to it. Maximum depth from a wall saw sits just over 750 mm.

Because the blade is round, corners of an opening aren't cut all the way through unless we over-cut past the connecting line. Where over-cutting would be a structural problem or simply isn't acceptable, we drill core holes in the corners to finish the penetration cleanly.

Features and benefits

Wall saws are known for accuracy. Openings come out sized, square and fixture ready, and the saw can cut flush against an adjoining surface or produce a bevelled or chamfered edge where it's called for.

The whole operation is automated. The motor travels the track under remote control, which makes it well suited to heavily reinforced concrete that would stall a hand-held saw.

Versatility is the other big one. Track can be mounted to a floor, a wall or a ceiling for inverted cutting, at any angle or degree of tilt.

Take a doorway as an example. The base and side cuts can be done with a hand saw or ring saw, but the head cut can't, because it isn't safe to run a hand-held saw above shoulder height. Track for a wall saw can be mounted up there safely and the penetration finished properly.

Where wall sawing is used

  • Saw cutting tilt-up panels, concrete walls and slabs where a road saw can't get access
  • Cutting openings in structure for doorways, windows, staircases and lift shafts
  • Flush cutting floors back to existing walls or structures
  • Upside-down and inverted cutting
  • Removing sections of heavily reinforced wall in controlled stages

What we need to know

  • Wall or slab thickness, and whether it's reinforced or post-tensioned
  • Size and position of the opening
  • Access for plant, power and water, and where the slurry can go
  • Whether the opening is structural, and if propping is in place

Frequently asked questions

How deep can a concrete wall saw cut?

Just over 750 mm in a single pass. Where a wall is thicker than that we cut from both faces if access allows, or move to a wire saw, which has no practical depth limit.

Can you cut an opening in a load-bearing wall?

Yes, but structural openings need to be engineered and propped before we cut. Have your engineer's detail ready and we'll work to it. We can also core the corners so the opening doesn't over-cut into the surrounding structure.

Do you need power and water on site?

Wall sawing is wet cut, so we need a water supply or we bring our own tank. For power we run either a hydraulic diesel pack, which suits outdoor and remote work, or hi-frequency electric where we're cutting inside an occupied building.

Will the corners of the opening be square?

The blade is round, so corners aren't cut fully through unless we over-cut past the connecting line. Where over-cutting isn't acceptable we drill core holes in each corner to finish the penetration cleanly and squarely.
